Mature trees and what they leave behind

Sale is a leafy suburb of Trafford, with tree-lined roads, large front gardens and the Bridgewater Canal running through. Trees mean shade, and shade means damp. Leaves, seeds and pollen settle on drives and patios and break down into a dark film that grows algae and moss.

Autumn adds wet leaves that leave tannin stains on paving. Overhanging branches drip onto roofs and conservatories for months. A clean-up here is often about removing a layer of organic build-up, not only dirt, and it tends to come back sooner under trees than in open spaces.

Semis, villas and larger plots

The housing includes 1930s semi-detached houses and larger Edwardian villas, many with block-paved driveways, front gardens and generous rear plots. Decorative brickwork, stone detailing and bay windows are common in the older roads.

Bigger gardens mean more timber: decking, fences, pergolas and sheds. Wood in the shade stays damp, turns green and goes slippery. Larger drives mean more paving to clean and re-sand. We start by walking the plot with you, listing each surface and agreeing what to clean now and what can wait.

Services for Sale properties

Our five services each have a use around Sale.

On a larger plot you can phase the work, with the front drive first and the garden timber at a later visit.

Wood needs a lighter touch than stone. A strong jet can lift the fibres of decking and leave a fuzzy surface that holds more water. We use lower pressure and a cleaner suited to the timber, then rinse thoroughly.

After cleaning, timber needs several dry days before oiling or staining, so plan the order of work. Many fences are shared or belong to a neighbour, and it is sensible to agree access with them first. We can quote deck and fence washing alongside the drive, so one visit covers the garden.

Cost factors on a leafy plot

General points that shape the quote:

  • Area of paving, decking and fencing.
  • Depth of build-up, since years of moss need more time than a light film.
  • Tree cover, which affects both the work and how soon the surface will green again.
  • Joint sand and sealing, which are optional extras.
  • Water access, usually an outside tap within reach.

Everything is listed line by line in the written quote.

A site visit is optional for most houses, because clear photos of each surface usually tell us enough to quote.

Questions about Sale

How can I stop my block paving going green under trees?

You cannot stop it entirely, because shade and leaf litter keep the surface damp. Sweeping leaves often, trimming back branches and treating the surface after cleaning slow the growth. Re-sanding the joints after a wash also helps keep the paving stable and tidy. Choosing a lighter, textured finish after cleaning can also make marks harder to see.

Do you re-sand paving joints after washing?

A jet can remove some of the sand from between the blocks, and we can refill the joints with kiln-dried sand as an extra item. It helps hold the blocks in place and discourages weeds. We list it separately in the quote so you can choose. Kiln-dried sand is brushed in and swept off once it settles.

Will pressure washing damage my decking?

It can when the jet is too strong or held too near the boards. We use lower pressure on timber and often a wood cleaner, then rinse. The goal is to lift green growth and grime without roughening the surface, so the oil or stain goes on well afterwards. Allow the timber to dry properly before oiling or staining it.

Can you clean a conservatory roof under a tree?

Yes, with a gentle method. Conservatory roofs and uPVC frames collect leaf mould and algae, and a strong jet can force water through seals. We use low pressure, soft brushes and a suitable cleaner. Safe access is the main factor in the plan. We never use a hard jet near sealed glass or roof joints.

When is the right time of year to have the garden cleaned?

Late spring and early summer give the longest dry spells, which suits timber and paving. Autumn clean-ups are useful after the leaves come down. We schedule around the weather, and a dry forecast matters more than the month. Warm, dry spells help paving dry quickly after cleaning.
